Homeless for a Night
JSCV held its inaugural fundraising event ‘Homeless for a Night’. The event was hosted at Angels Academy a local early childhood academy; however on April 24th Angels Academy was not filled with students standing on the lawn but people sleeping on the lawn. People from the community came out and experienced being ‘Homeless for a Night’ with Joseph & Sarah Caring for Vets. Many gave up the comfort of their homes to take on the challenge and gain awareness and empathy of a growing situation that many of our service men and women face daily.
The event began with local High School JROTC students presenting the Nations Colors and demonstrating military precision through showcasing their drill and ceremony skills. Some of JSCV recent program graduates spoke to the attendees about their journey from homelessness to permanent housing. Denise Leak, executive director of JSCV said “Last night was an eye opening experience to have slept through the night while your mind was constantly on the weather.” “It rained three separate times. Each time was short, and with each rain drop I was talking to God, and asking him to let it be the last.” She said with a bit of laughter.
The community was asked to come out and be homeless for one night and live without the comforts and they did just that, they slept on cardboard boxes, blankets and sleeping bags. Some searched high and low to find shelter from the rain. Denise knew that she and others were outside by choice, but that is not the case for many of our service men and women. Our ‘Homeless for a Night’ community campers provided medical screenings and a modest dinner as part of the evening events.
